No more sound on master after click on SND

Post by claudius06 »

Hello Bernd,

I've encountered the following bug twice: everything runs fine, the program has been running for several weeks, and then at some point, I click on "SND" on a channel, and suddenly the sound stops on the PLAY channel. The sound is still modulating on the decks, but there's no output on the main mix anymore. Have you ever experienced this issue? Do you have any idea how to prevent it?

Thank you,
Claude.

No. But it sound like you have a config issue on your device/mixer setup.
To which channel do you SND to? And what outputs dongle use?
Do you really have multiple sounscards?

On this channel ("Alan"), I send SND to REC and "CLF2". I use only one soundcard (Sound Blaster Audigy Fx V2) in addition to the motherboard's sound card.
I’m attaching my configuration, which I hope will help you better. And if that’s indeed your question, I use the output of this sound card to drive a pair of speakers.

For your information, I’m using SND as you advised:
May be in your workflow you might want to flip the config of your REC and PFL use. I.e., set the default ‘Output To’ to the PFL channel and use the SND to connect it to your REC output.
This way, you can always pre-listen but only use the input effectively when you activate SND?
And it works very well this way, except for the issue I just mentioned.

Beside your Sound Blaster you are using a Virtual Cable.
Not sure where you use your internal motherboard sound card? May be for the MIC input mixer.

Then you are mixing different sample rates (eg. 48k for PLAY, REC and OUT; but 41k for PFL). Try to set all to 48k to avoid internal resampling. But that shouldn’t cause any real issues.

Then you are mixing all driver model types, which is not really good. Ie. ASIO, WASAPI and WDM. This result in issues over time, as the different drivers are not synchronized. Ie. they might drift apart over time.
Eg. Try to only use the same driver model for all decided, eg. only WASAPI or only ASIO.

If this is not possible, check, if they drift apart over time. Or even give a buffer over it underflow - this typically results in some audios being dropped for a few milliseconds or start to stutter.

Then you are already setting ‚Output To‘ of ‚Alan‘ to the PFL channel. But you said, you then SND2 also to REC and CLF2. And TEC goes to PLAY and PLAY also goes to OUT.

A quite long chaining. You should set the same sample rate and driver model for this chain as well and align it.

I just did a quick test with a similar setup (except that I don’t have any virtual cable!) and that worked fine here.

So maybe your virtual cable driver is the issue here?

Can you try to use the MIC1 channel and the same SND2 - is that giving you the same issue?
If not, ai am afraid, your Virtual Cable is the issue - maybe you can configure something extra in their settings?

Thank you for this very detailed response. I will study everything and run some tests. What's strange is that it's not a clear-cut bug—it has happened twice in three months, and the rest of the time, everything works like a charm. I'll keep you informed.

That sounds like it might happen after some time. Eg. after the devices drift apart because of not using the same clock.

You might try the ‚Recreate and Reset‘ function of the related mixer channel (eg. ALAN) - make a right-click on the mixer channel name.
If that resolves the issue, it is an issue of the multiple divorces not being synced vie a world clock.

I understand the hypothesis of a shift in the global clock, I see what it's about. If I try the "Recreate and Reset" function, will it cancel my settings for this channel or not at all?

No, it will keep all current settings of course. But reset any internal buffers.

Hello Bernd,
Just to say you that I had no more problem about this.
Thank you once again for your help.
