How can I pause or stop a started overlay?

You first need to enable the options in the Overlay Editor settings under Options.
Then you can use the UI controls, eg. to cancel the Overlay press the Cancel button in the Overlay Player.

That worked, thanks. Now I'd like to prevent jingles from starting while an overlay is playing. The reason is that overlays play on my AirLite via channel 7, the same channel as the overlay. After the jingle plays, that channel is automatically muted. I'm using Benjamin's AirLite settings. Is that possible?

This doesn't quite apply to me. I want to prevent a jingle (via PFOA Cartwall or Airlite) from playing while an overlay is playing. So, simply put, temporarily disable Cartwall completely.

Ah okay. That is not possible. There is no option to disable the cartwall completely.
The only option is to just not using the cartwall at that time.
