Ducking Volume On Cardwall Play

Post by RedPanda »

I'm wondering if there is a way to have the audio duck while a card from the cardwall is played? Is this already a feature? I can't seem to find where to set it.

This is not an automatic feature, but you might use the cardwall events together with control commands to achieve this.

Seems the easiest way to do this would be to invoke the talkover button. So I'm stuck, how do I do this or make this command?

Ok so I was able to instal and play with this, and you did great on implementing this feature, but with one major problem, unless I just don't know how to do it.
So it's great for using beds or something that you need to duck the entire audio for,and talking over but does this duck the mic level too? I hope not! If not then cool.

But here is what is wrong still with this feature. It's ducking both the cardwall AND the main volume. That's ok for some things, but for the most important thing, like liners, splitters, voice overs etc, you SHOULDN'T have the cardwall ducking WITH this audio. The way it NEEDS to operate is to have the main audio (wherever) duck while the carwall plays at NORMAL volume. For example: You start playing a song and you have a voice over "Hi this is Madonna, your listening to .." so you want to play this over the intro of the song, but you need to drop the audio of the song so the voice over is heard correct, otherwise it plays with equal volume of the song and it's drowned out.

Can you do this? Is this possible? This is what I would like.

In another software I had, this was possible. So if you played the liner, the song audio would drop (duck), but NOT the cardwall (carts). Thus the on air sound/volume would be produced correctly with no drowning out effect of the cardwall (cart) item.

Hope you know what I mean.

Thanks!

Wow, ok, so it's possible. I understand. Ya I guess my mixers are setup not correct. Not sure I know how to setup the cardwalls to use a seperate mixer, but I iwll take a look around and see if I can do it.

My mixer setting look like: PLAY/PFL/INP/Main

Thanks again.

I fully understand what you are saying and you can (as always) freely configure the behaviour of the 'Auto Duck' feature.
However, it is important to know, that the 'Auto Duck' feature always ducks (attenuates) one or more mixer output channel(s)!
Which mixer output channel(s) are being attenuated during AutoDuck can be configured in the general settings, section 'Mixing/Fading' when clicking on the 'AutoDuck Settings...' button.

With respect to the Cardwall I and II AutoDuck feature please select the related mixer output channel(s) you want to 'duck' which a related cardwall is playing.
However, as said, it is always a mixer output channel being ducked (attenuated).
So in the scenario you describe, you simply have to ensure, that you are using separate mixer output channels for your 'main audio' and your cardwall audio.
E.g. create a mixer output channel (PLAY) to which you route your playlist DJ Players (guess this is what you would call 'main audio') and create a separate mixer output channel (CW) to which you route your cardwall.
In this mixer setup you can now specify in the 'AutoDuck Settings...' to only duck the PLAY mixer output channel for the cardwall AutoDuck feature (if you play the cardwall, the song audio would drop (duck), but NOT the cardwall).

The same is btw true for the AutoDuck feature regarding mixer input channels...it is always (only) one or more mixer output channels which are being ducked.
E.g. if you configured a mixer input channel which is automatically being routed to another mixer output channel...make sure, that you do not also duck that mixer output channel.

As you can see, all is possible...it is just a matter of getting your mixer setup right ;-)
And I guess you now understand, why the flexibility to define multiple mixer output channels is so important...

So do the following to create a separate mixer output channel.
First take a look to your existing PLAY mixer output channel configuration (make a double-click on its name)...just create another (new) mixer output channel using almost the same settings:
E.g.:
a) right-click on the PLAY mixer output channel name and select 'Add Mixer Channel' from the context menu
(this will create a new mixer output channel strip to the very right, eg. it is called 'Out 4')
b) now double-click on this new mixer output channel name...to open its configuration dialog...and specify the following:
- Mixer Name: CW
- Driver Model: NONE
- Output To: select the same mixer channel as your existing PLAY channel is using (eg. 'Main')
- leave the rest as defaulted and click OK (to close the mixer config)
c) make a right-click again on this new mixer channel name...now you can select 'Move Left' to position the new mixer channel next to your PLAY channel
d) now go to the general settings (F3) and select the 'Routing' section...
e) In the 'Routing' section specify this new mixer output as the target for the Cardwall I and II output (eg. select 'CW').
f) now go to the 'Mixing/Fading' section and click on the 'AutoDuck Settings...' button
g) here you can now select the output mixers to be effected by the Cardwall AutoDuck feature...eg. select (check) the 'PLAY' channel, but NOT the 'CW' and 'Main' channel

That's it...

HI!

Ok I did this as you said and everything looks correct, but it's still not working right. When I play the card the "Play" channel is sliding down, but so is the volume of the card playing again.. so I still can't manage to get the card to play at normal volume and have only the music lower. :(

Here is my mixer setup:
